History
Mr. Smulekoff retired to California
in 1929. His two sons and his son-in-law, John Miller, took
over operation of the business. Mr. Miller married Henry's
daughter, Ruth, and gave up life as a traveling salesman to join
the furniture business. After over 40 years of serving Cedar
Rapids, Henry Smulekoff died at the age of 69 and the Smulekoff-Miller
Fund was established. This fund contributes to local
charitable organizations.
In 1942, Smulekoff's moved to it's current location on the
corner of First Street and Third Avenue SE and added a nearby
warehouse. The three men operated the organizations as a
troika, each having equal voice in the financial affairs.
Under the direction of the three men, in 1974, a two-story
addition with 43,000 square feet of space was added to the
existing building.
