Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of essential
oils-essences extracted from flowers, spices, fruits, woods, and
leaves-to affect the mind, body, and spirit. Through their aromas
and chemical properties, these oils can induce calm moods and
peaceful emotional states, awaken deep-seated memories, and simply
make you feel wonderful. The most popular way of using essential
oils is in the bath. A few drops of pine, lavender, rosemary, or
jasmine oil in a tub of warm water can have an energizing,
relaxing, or sensuous effect.
Essential oils can also be diffused into the air,
applied in a poultice, directly inhaled from the bottle, and
massaged onto the skin. When applying essential oils to the skin,
dilute 2 or 3 drops with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or aloe
vera gel to prevent irritation. Never apply essential oil to the
skin straight from the bottle. Pregnant women should always check
with their doctor before using essential oils, and those with
medical ailments or sensitive skin should also first consult a
physician.
Aromatherapy began as a formal science in 1937, when a
French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, burned his hand while
working in a perfumery. To relieve his pain, he plunged it into
the nearest container of cold liquid, which happened to be
lavender oil. His hand healed quickly, and with so little
scarring, that Gattefosse devoted the remainder of his life to the
study of the medicinal powers of essential oils.
Today, more and more people are becoming interested in
aromatherapy, as they become more conscious of the side effects of
drugs used in conventional medicine and simultaneously desire to
take more responsibility for their own health and well-being.
Aromatherapy is commonly used to cope with minor but annoying
conditions such as jet lag, insomnia, indigestion, headaches,
hangovers, dry skin, and minor stress. In France, herbal oils are
prescribed by doctors, and in Japan peppermint oil is diffused in
office buildings to keep workers alert.
Discover essential oils for yourself: Try one or two from
the following list in a bath, in a diffuser, or in a massage oil.
Note that essential oils are extremely volatile and are usually
sold in dark glass bottles, which should be stored be stored in a
cool place out of direct sunlight. If stored correctly, their
shelf life is many years.
